house.jpgIt’s springtime here in Nevada and a lot of homes are on the market. Many of them are in foreclosure which is very sad. Chuck and I both have homes in a lovely age restricted community called Siena. Siena is a 667 acre age-privileged community located within the master-planned community of Summerlin in Las Vegas, Nevada. Secluded behind a six-foot high masonry perimeter wall and accessed-controlled entries are 2,001 homes. We enjoy many amenities here including a golf course, club house, health and fitness center, indoor and out door pools, tennis courts, horseshoe pits and bocce courts and a huge community center for social and club activities. This Village Center contains over 71,000 square feet of interior space, all of which is connected by a meandering pedestrian walk adjacent to the lake, streams and waterfalls that border the first golf hole.

Chuck is ready to sell his home and scale down to something smaller and moreliving-room-dining.jpg manageable. He has a beautiful 2234 square foot single family home that he has just put on the market. It has 2 master suites and 2.5 baths and is located on the 15th green of the Siena golf course. There is a fireplace in the living room and and granite countertops in the kitchen. The lot is very private and has a beautiful view of the Red Rock Canyon.

Imagine sitting here in the cool, cool, cool of the evening with a nice glass of your favorite beveragpatio.jpge. Ours is always a good Cabernet. Siena offers seniors a wonderful healthy and joyful lifestyle. We love to bike around the community on the safe streets and enjoy the beautiful scenery. The gym gets our attention every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. It is a great place in which to live and to maintain a youthful mind, body and spirit.

If you love the desert and Nevada and are looking to move or know someone who might be interested in moving, take a look at this home in Las Vegas Nevada listing number 21562046.

Hepatitis, Fearful In Vegas

POSTED BY Gayle on Apr 2 under Disease, Health

needles.jpgLast December my doctor and I decided it was time for me to undergo a colonoscopy as a routine preventative care measure. I was 66 at that time, in excellent health, but had never had a colonoscopy. Unfortunately, for me, I was scheduled for the endoscopy center here in Nevada that since then has been in the national news. Over 40,000 patients here in Nevada have been exposed to Hepatitis B and C and possibly HIV, several cases of Hepatitis, have been linked back to this particular endoscopy center. At the time I was scheduled to have my procedure, December 2007, none of this had been made public. Read more

Music My Life’s Passion

POSTED BY Chuck and Gayle on Mar 28 under Lifestyle, Memories, Music

chuck-singing.jpgHow many people can honestly say they worked at a job they really loved and got paid for it? I sang for a living for a good many years and did just that. Music was my forte. My voice was a gift from God. I was never formally trained to sing, all my training was right on stage. During my college years I played drums and sang for dances with small groups and bands. At Pasadena City College I performed many major music shows. One of the annual shows was called “Crafty Hall”. In that show I sang a popular song of the day called “I’m Yours”. A mock TV camera and crew followed me around stage. This was my introduction to show business. Read more

ANTIAGING is a NAME poem. Poetry that tells about the word. It uses the letters of the word for the first letter of each line.

BOOMER is a CINQUAIN. Poetry with five lines. Line 1 has one word (the title). Line 2 has two words that describe the title. Line 3 has three words that tell the action. Line 4 has four words that express the feeling, and line 5 has one word which repeats the title or giving another word related to it.

Words are fun to play with. Writing poetry is a great activity to keep your mind stimulated and active. Writing is a way to clarify your thinking and keep your memory sharp. I’m certainly not a great poet but I do enjoy the challenge of writing and expressing my thoughts in a new and different mode. It is a way to stretch my imagination and boost my brain power as I grow older. Mental exercise like writing poetry, learning new things or developing your creativity, may strengthen your brain cells and preserve your mental functions. Do something active, like writing, that you enjoy. It will lower your stress and get your brain running smoothly. You may find that you worry less, remember more and begin to think better. Regular use of the brain, like physical exercise, has been shown to build neurons in the brain and stop the decline of mental function that often comes with old age. Have some fun and try a cinquain or name poem of your own. Try it you’ll like it!

Fitness Is Important Even At Age 76

POSTED BY Chuck and Gayle on Mar 14 under Aging, Fitness, Health

chuck-mm.jpgYes, I still go to the gym three days a week just as I did when I started working out at 16. Holy mackerel that was 60 years ago when my doctor recommended I go to the gym to work out in order to get healthier. I was that skinny kid who had sand kicked in his face at the beach. I know most of you do not remember the famous Charles Atlas ad, where a well built bully kicked sand in the face of a skinny kid just like me. That was a very famous ad back then and one I could relate to. Like the ad that was pretty much me, sick most of the time and very skinny. I was five years of age when a bout of bronchitis turned into asthma, which I have had ever since. I did not allow asthma to stop me from winning my high school letter in field and track. Boy could I run. (Especially if someone was chasing me.) As I think back on those years I had very little self-esteem. I was highly motivated to get rid of that scared skinny kid image that plagued me. My doctor felt that body building in the gym was the answer. That turned out to be one of my best undertakings ever. You better believe it was a confidence builder for me. Evidence today shows that individuals who exercise regularly do show improvements in self-esteem. Read more

Reading, A Healthy Lifestyle Choice

POSTED BY Gayle on Feb 29 under Health, Lifestyle

books-in-lr.jpgReading is one of my favorite pastimes. A healthy lifestyle choice that anyone can make. I’ve been an avid reader since I was in second grade. It is a passion I have never grown out of and one I can carry with me as I age. Reading is relaxing, enjoyable, entertaining, inspiring, enlightening and keeps you knowledgeable about many subjects. In a literate society like we have, the ability to read is vital in order to function effectively on a daily basis. Reading is important and involves every aspect of our lives from road signs, tax forms, menus, newspapers, the list goes on and on. Reading is inescapable in our lives. As functional as reading is, it is also one of the most pleasurable and enjoyable pastimes you can do on your own. It is unfathomable to me that people actually “hate” to read. That attitude in itself, is to me an unhealthy one. Read more

Strange Disease, Jon’s True Story

POSTED BY Chuck and Gayle on Feb 29 under Disease, Health

We lost our son to Pick’s disease a few years ago. Pick’s disease is a strange and hideous brain disorder. He wasjonnavy.jpg a young man when he passed. Pick’s disease is a rare and irreversible form of dementia. It has some similarities to Alzheimer’s disease. Pick’s runs a shorter course then Alzheimer’s. The average length is about 6 years. Pick’s tends to affect only certain parts of the brain but Alzheimer’s can affect any part. We were relieved to hear that Picks is usually not passed down genetically. We had 2 other boys that we were concerned about. Pick’s generally progresses slowly, shrinking tissues in the temporal and frontal lobes of the brain. Speech difficulty, impaired thinking and behavior changes take place slowly but continue to worsen over time. Read more
