Biking For Fitness and Fun
Get on your bike! Biking is quick, healthy and very affordable. Thousands of people have discovered that biking can help them lose weight, improve their health, and maintain their youth for a longer and healthier life. Everyday biking is a great aerobic exercise to increase your fitness. Just fifteen minutes a day five times a week can burn off 12 pounds of fat in a year.
Along with three solid workouts at the gym each week, most of the time, weather permitting, we ride our bikes. Gayle and I love biking to the gym. We are both very much into a healthy lifestyle, including good nutrition and plenty of exercise. These are our choices for staying young in mind, body and spirit. Riding bikes not only helps us to maintain our youth, but is a heck of a lot of fun as well. It is invigorating and great exercise. Getting an ample supply of vitamin D is another benefit for us. We ride on quiet streets in our community. We have really become familiar with our neighborhood and the surrounding area. We wear our helmets, of course, and obey traffic laws.
On the days we ride our bikes to the gym we are energized and warmed up to begin our two hour workout. We love it and highly recommend it for any age. People of all fitness levels and all body shapes can ride a bike if you take it slow and easy at first. For those of you who have not ridden your bike for a long time or if your bike is just sitting in the garage collecting dust, try taking it out for a spin.
There are dozens of benefits and reasons to try out biking. Here are a dozen we feel are some of the best;
- Weight loss to help you look and feel better
- Decreases anxiety and reduces stress
- Improves cardiovascular health
- Therapeutic for the mind and body
- Improves lung fitness
- Improves your mood
- Low impact exercise for the body
- Improves leg strength and bone mass
- Maintains strength and coordination
- Better muscle tone
- Increased life expectancy
- Biking is a life long activity
Remember to start slowly, practice in a quiet area until you have full control of the gears and brakes and are comfortable riding short distances. Gradually increase your distance and your exertion level. In a few short weeks your fitness will have improved and you will be feeling happier and healthier. Biking is a healthy lifestyle choice! Start riding, you may learn to love it as we have.
